History
Fair trade is an organized social movement and market-based approach to empowering developing country producers and promoting sustainability.
The first attempts to commercialize fair trade goods were initiated in the 1940s by religious groups and various politically oriented NGOs. Since this time several fair trade standards have been developed. But present fair trade certification schemes didn’t cover the entire range of products, production situations and trade relations. In responding to the increasing demands of consumers, producers, processors, and retailers the Institute for Marketecology (IMO) and the Swiss Bio-Foundation have jointly created and implemented the Social & FairTrade Certification Programme in 2006.
What is Fair for life?
"Fair for life" is a certification programme for social accountability and fairtrade in agricultural, manufacturing and trading operations. It combines strict social and Fairtrade standards with adaptability to local conditions.
The fair for life certification is applicable on all products: food and non food goods.
The certification guarantees that human rights are respected at any stage of production, that workers have fair working conditions and that smallholder farmers receive a fair share.
Fair trade is made on the fair remuneration of producers. Buyers must pay a fair price to producers as well as a premium. The fair price and fairtrade premium is agreed between supplier and buyer. This fair trade premium should enable producers to support themselves and to invest in community development. In return, producers must comply with labour rights, environmental and social requirements.
IMO Social & FairTrade Certification guarantees you that the products have been produced in a fair and sustainable way:
